Programs At Sky Valley Food Bank

Our food distribution program has been running strong for almost fifty years. Our team of volunteers distributes thousands of pounds of food every week to residents of  Monroe and the upper Sky Valley including Index, Gold Bar, and Skykomish.

We distribute staples like bread, rice, beans, oats, milk, eggs, and lots and lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, along with recipes for turning our produce and grains into delicious and nutritious meals that the whole family will enjoy.

Our food is generously donated from a range of community partners—grocery stores, small businesses, churches and non-profits committed to fighting hunger in our community.

Our food also comes from neighbors like you—who donate from their own shopping trips, pantries, and gardens, and organize food drives with their co-workers, church groups, and schools. Monetary donations make sure we never run out of staples like beans or baby food!

Index Mobile Food Bank

Our Index Mobile Food Bank feeds up to 50 people every week at Doolittle Park. We fill our truck with more than 1,500 pounds of meat, eggs, milk, yogurt, rice, beans, oats, bread, and cereal, along with hundreds of pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables, and drive the 23 miles up Highway 2 to Index. The families we serve are always waiting for our van to help us unload and set up! They have been counting on their Neighbors Helping Neighbors every week since we first pulled up outside the Index Community Church in July, 2015.

In 2023, our mobile food bank distributed 99,968 lbs of food, feeding 1,562 people!

Weekend Food Backpacks

Over 250 bags filled with nutritious, easy-to-prepare meals and snacks go out every weekend to students in need throughout the Monroe School District!

To combat the growing problem of childhood hunger in Snohomish County, in 2011 we began distributing emergency weekend food backpacks to 14 kindergarteners at Frank Wagner Elementary. The backpacks contained five pounds of nutritious, easily-prepared food, enough for two breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. Over the next five years, we added first and second-grade classrooms, serving a weekly average of 58 students during that time. In 2017, we added all the grades at Frank Wagner, along with students in need at four other schools, and the program doubled in size.

It takes our volunteers about 12 hours every week to fill the 250 or more backpacks so that these children don’t have to spend 48 hours every weekend experiencing the despair of hunger.
