About The Sky Valley Food Bank
Neighbors Helping Neighbors Since 1976
We couldn’t distribute more than 85,000 pounds of food every month without our volunteers, partners, staff, and programs. Learn about how we got started and what we do today.
Our Mission
To kindly and respectfully provide equitable access to nutritious food in our community.
Our Values
Value all individuals. Respect all individuals. Be kind to all individuals.
Our Vision
No person should go hungry.
There are more than 1,300 families in our community who don’t know where their next meal is coming from, who don’t have something to put on their table for dinner.
Imagine the stress and worry that comes from not having anything to feed your family.
At Sky Valley Food Bank, we believe that neighbors don’t let neighbors go hungry.
We provide supplemental food to those 1,300 families in need so that they don’t have to experience the despair of hunger. Our 100-plus volunteers distribute more than 85,000 pounds of food every month to our hungry neighbors.
This food is from our community-from schools, churches, businesses and community groups, it is donated by local grocery stores, and picked up every day by our volunteer drivers, it is donated by our partners Northwest Harvest and Food Lifeline, and it is purchased with your donations.

History of the Sky Valley Food Bank
Our story begins in 1976, when Julia Morris teamed up with the Monroe Kiwanis Club to help with their Christmas Food Basket Drive. She knew there was a need all year round and began giving food out of her own cupboards. She rallied for help and donations until the Food Bank was officially set up inside a church annex. The Food Bank had many temporary homes until a permanent building was established at 233 Sky River Parkway in 1987, where it has continued to operate to this day.
Julia Morris was a local hero who worked diligently to reduce hunger in her community until the age of 81. She is memorialized by the City of Monroe’s official declaration the community garden next door the “Julia V. Morris Centennial Garden.”
When Julia passed away in 1999, her daughter Julie A. Morris stepped in as Executive Director and served until her retirement in 2010. Julie was instrumental in building the strong foundation that we stand on to this day. Neil Watkins ran the Food Bank from 2010 to 2017. During his time here Neil expanded the volunteer program and really strengthened our community ties. He was followed by Cindy Chessie from 2017 to 2022. Cindy led us through the COVID-19 pandemic and secured funding and plans for our 2023 expansion. Our current Executive Director, Matthew Campbell, took over the role in April, 2022. Matthew, a Monroe resident with a strong background in the food bank industry, is proud to be serving in his own community.
The day-to-day operations of the Food Bank are led by the Executive Director and overseen by our Board of Directors, made up of 11 dedicated and devoted individuals. But the lion’s share of the work is all handled by our team of more than 100 volunteers, who donate over 15,000 hours per year to ensure that EVERY family in Monroe has food on their table.

Our Impact
Food insecurity continues to be a significant issue in our area, with one-quarter of the children in the Monroe school district qualifying for free or reduced-price lunches. Within Snohomish County, nearly 90,000 residents are not sure where their next meal is coming from, and 1 out of 5 children are at risk of hunger.
Every week we provide food for an average of around 400 families through our Market and our weekend food bags. This amounts to more than 85,000 pounds of food distributed every month—over one million pounds per year!
